Atmosphere and Rays of Sun… I want you July 27, 2008

Oh I want you, I want you, I want you
On a chair with a dead magazine
In the cave at the tip of the lily
In some hallways where loves never been
On a bed where the moon has been sweating
In a cry filled with footsteps and sand
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz

-Leonard Cohen

I’m currently at Bauhaus, enjoying cups of iced coffee with Derek and this song came on.

It’s amazing how music can make you feel even if it was written decades ago.  It’s even more amazing that something from the past can feel so new.  There’s a word for it.  I’m trying to remember, and I can almost feel it, but I’m only tasting the surface.  Regardless of knowing the right word, these lyrics feel more like poetry than any song on the radio today.  Along with the right notes, instruments, crescendos and staccatos, there’s emotion.  I think that’s what make this song so beautiful, it’s almost human.  With our frailty and strength, it is us.

1. If you could change one life-changing event in the life of someone important to you, would you?

Everyone knows what they need to do, and I wouldn’t want to interfere with their decisions unless they specifically told me “make my decision.”  As I’ve been without a car and have mainly been using public transportation, I’ve been able to see many homeless women and men.  Each with a sign declaring their state of bankruptcy or their plan to get a ticket for the greyhound.  One person simply wanted a slice of pizza and crossed out the amount on his sign every time he was closer.  I would give all these people on the streets a second chance.
2. Which do you think is easier to do, being friends for many years, or being life partners for many years?

I think staying in touch with people can be hard…so being friends for many years can probably be difficult. Having a life partner means you found that friend who you would take anywhere with you.

3. Have you ever walked away from someone you considered a friend?

No.

4. If you had to choose between telling the truth and hurting a friend or lying and making them happy, which would you choose?

Doesn’t everyone crave for the truth?  After you find out, that’s that…all your questions have been answered.  If my butt looks big in this, let me know, I’ll change my pants.

5. Which would you rather hear–the truth which will hurt, or the comforting lie?
Sometimes hearing something unrealistically true or a comforting lie helps us cope and feel better about ourselves.  If the truth is something that I need to hear, let me know.  If the truth is something that would disturb or hurt my feelings because you’re intending to be mean, then stop.

I have an increased motivation to look at West Coast cities for Graduate programs.   Not only for the weather, but the scenery…  It’s beautiful here.

Yesterday, Derek and I went to the Red Sox vs. Mariners baseball game, it was incredible because once we were Seattle we could see mountains in the distance.  In what city on the East Coast can you see mountains?  uhh NONE.

So as you all know, I turned 21 on Sunday.  Derek and I went along the shore on a hunt for anemones.   The weather was absolutely perfect, and the contrast of the dark green leaves upon the trees and the cerulean sky/water was beautiful.  Everything about this state reminds me of Alaska, except for the little fact that this place is much more populated.  After the beach, Derek and I headed to this really nice restaurant near Pike’s marketplace where we had dinner at the Pink Door.  I ate Pistachio Chicken, which I don’t recall having any nutty flavor, regardless though, it was excellent.  House wine was my first official drink…and I’m writing all of this out because obviously when I’m 40 years old, I’d want to remember my first drink.

I’m at a great coffeehouse right now, even better than the College Perk (which has been shut down due to a fire).  WHY IS IT SO AMAZING YOU ASK?  There’s a huge bookshelf which extends from the first floor to the second, but not only that, it comes equipped with one of those rolling ladders.  I need a rolling ladder, it’s necessary for any activity in my life.  If any of you are in the Seattle area, check out Bauhaus books and coffee.  Also yelp is a great website to find reviews on various stores and restaurants in the area…its been a great resource since I’ve been here.

Well, I should get back to crossing out schools on my list and writing my personal statement.

Ciao!

P.S.  For all those who are interested, I get to be a UTA for Microbio for the fall semester!  I am ECSTATIC!

It almost feels as if I’ve been waiting too long.

Still, I stand outside with my microphone as I sing to a window

Singing the same old tune hoping it will come out differently the next time.

Everyone says this and everyone says that

Yet it almost always feels different within

Stagnant.

Just blinds.

GRE Graduate July 15, 2008

Congratulations to me, I just graduated from Kaplan’s GRE class!  Now to give a few words since I’m sage and older now.   I want to emphasize to everyone who is considering to take a preparation course to do it if you don’t have the self-motivation.  If you do, then great…you don’t need to take the course.   If you are constantly working like me, the class will be perfect.  It gave me motivation to keep on working on my flashcards and on-line assignments.  I reviled my flashcards when I couldn’t understand their meaning, which usually resulted in sleep.  I sanctioned a few words, but those were usually the cards I had known through past readings.  Okay, I’m obviously using my new vocabulary.

Updates:

  • I’ve been practicing on my acoustic guitar, but it’s difficult since the the C string cannot be tightened therefore I always sound out of tune.  WHY CAN’T MY WRONG-SOUNDING NOTES SOUND PRETTY?
  • I’m almost done with one of my books and then I get to visit the library for more.  And YES I’m excited :D
  • I AM ECSTATIC THAT I GET TO SEE DEREK IN 2 DAYS!  YES! YES! YES! I hoped you just imagined me with Herbal shampoo because although a very-used comparison, it fits so well that I had no other choice but to use it.  I really dislike ending sentences with ‘it.’

Here’s the truth… July 13, 2008

My brother and I are two very different people.   He took pride in seeing me cry from the constant teasing and hitting during our childhood.  Earlier this morning, he took pictures of me and labeled them outloud as “true hatred,” “hate”…he might as well have called me the devil.  He decided to brag about his Associates and how it was all paid for by the military.  He loved how I was going to leave for Seattle soon and yelled out “YES.”  He never took a chance to get to know me…instead that bump above my eyebrow back in higschool was when he threw a flashlight at me.  I told everyone I was just clumsy.   I don’t think I can call him family.

Social Worlds July 13, 2008

“All of these kinds of social worlds helps develop their ability to interact with people, and particularly, to do things like post a comment that might be a little controversial for example, and see what kind of reactions they get.”

– Larry Rosen, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology
